We've Been Tinkering Again

E-mail Print PDF

Sorry I haven't been posting, but I have been busy coding. Yep, we've just gone through another round of major changes on this site. Major for us, but hopefully not for you. I wish we could leave well enough alone, but the internet is not a static environment. Coding practices change, new technology becomes available, and those darn spammers just keep getting smarter. At least I didn't completely redesign everything this time.

This recent round of changes was driven primarily by spammers and mostly affects the Mazatlan forum. We were having a problem with spam posts, several a day, and it was taking a lot of time and energy to keep on top of them and delete them. We really appreciate the members who took the time to flag posts and bring them to our attention immediately, particularly Bob Story. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

As long as we were overhauling, we took the opportunity to change the way a lot of things work, in the hopes of making the forum easier to use. You will now notice large buttons for posting new topics and replies. These functions are no longer hidden in tabs. We have also changed the text editor, so hopefully the problems some of you had in the past trying to post are now gone. There are new icons in place that will hopefully offer better visual clues to how things work.

We have also changed the login system – again. I know in the changes we made last time to bring the logins for both the forum and main site under one authentication, some of you had frustrating and persistent problems. Hopefully that is resolved now. I do know, however, that 14 of you are going to have trouble. Your accounts didn't sync properly because of mismatched passwords, so email me and we will get it straightened out.

We are striving to create a friendly place that engenders a free exchange of ideas and information. And that means people being respectful to each other. We have a few features to help the community manage this. There is a karma system. You can give people karma or take it away based on their helpfulness and attitude. If any member's karma sinks too low, they are automatically banned and will have to petition an administrator for reinstatement. There is also a friends and foes feature. You can make people your friends and be automatically notified when they are online with you, or mark them as a foe and all of their posts will be blocked from your view, so that if someone irritates you, you don't have to waste time viewing their posts.

We are personally dedicated to maintaining the quality level of the forum. Each post is read by a site owner or a moderator. Inappropriate or rude content is deleted and the poster is officially warned. People who habitually post unacceptable content will be banned.

So, please, after all this work, we would love it if all of you gave the new forum a test drive. Log in and ask a question, tell us about your favorite restaurant, share information about upcoming events, or just post something cool about Mazatlan. If you don't have an account, you can register for one now. It's free and easy. Invite your friends.

  • Bob Story  - Great Job!
I'm sure that everyone appreciates all the hard work. Looks great!

    Thank you very much :)
  • April  - Hurrah!
    I can log in again!!!!

So many pithy comments have been lost due to my unfortunate status as a lurker who couldn't log in.

... Well maybe that was for the best eh?

Or, I could ignore all parenting duties and go back to each and every post and put my 2 peso's in. I'd look brilliant being the only one to figure out the mystery substance.

All our love to you both!
    ~A.

Okay, you got me laughing out loud. You would be brilliant...to anyone who doesn't read the site regularly. I am sooo glad you are back. I missed your comments.

  • Betty  - Just finished
I just finished reading your entire blog from beginning to end. What a hoot I have had reading your experiences moving and living in Mexico. Your blog was recommended by Nancy when I was reading her entire blog. She has so many sites listed I hardly know where to start. I would like to be on your email list if at all possible. Thank you for such an entertaining read.

Wow, Betty. It is always such a nice compliment when someone takes the time to read the blog in its entirety. And I never get tired of compliments. :)

I don't actually have an email list. I don't send out email to my members - ever. I have a real thing about spam. But, you can subscribe to the rss feed to be automatically notified of new posts and recipes. There is also an rss feed for the forums, if you like.

Nancy's blog is great. You couldn't have picked a better place to start. Thanks for reading. I hope to see you around.
