I was making piloncillo syrup, which I have adopted as the main sweetener in my house. I use it in my morning tea and in place of honey, maple syrup, and corn syrup. With just the volume of tea I drink in the morning, I can go through a batch of syrup pretty quickly, so I decided to make an extra large batch, throwing an entire pack of four cones in a pot with some water and setting the stove on medium. I didn't have anything else to do in the kitchen, so I went back into the office to get a little work done.

Our getting-ready-for-bed routine was disrupted by an appallingly loud noise in the front of our house. It sounded like someone trying to pound their way through our front gate. Chuck and I looked at each other, and he went to peek out the window to see what was going on. As he was headed through the living room, the noise changed to resemble something more like someone hammering on concrete with a large sledgehammer. I nervously waited for Chuck to come back. When he did, his shoulders were shaking with laughter. Dying to find out why, I rushed to the window to have a look for myself.

The five gallon bucket seems to be the carrying method of choice for all kinds of things around here. If you look around, you will see many people toting what used to be a white plastic bucket, so old and well-carried that all trace of the label marking its original contents are gone. The top is usually covered with a frayed towel that was once a brilliant white, but many washings and constant use has rendered a dull grey. The primary bucket carriers are the car wash guys, and the bucket makes perfect sense and wouldn't make anyone think twice. But there are also many people selling things, usually food things, from scuffed, 5-gallon buckets. I used to ask myself what kind of crazy person would buy something from such a vessel. But now, I'm that kind of crazy.

I know you all are going to think I have completely gone off the deep end this time in my search for new and interesting things to do with piloncillo, but trust me, you have to try this. Candied bacon is great on its own, but try serving it with pancakes, over dulce de leche ice cream, on a fresh green salad, or as a tasty garnish for roasted squab.

Sorry I haven't been posting, but I have been busy coding. Yep, we've just gone through another round of major changes on this site. Major for us, but hopefully not for you. I wish we could leave well enough alone, but the internet is not a static environment. Coding practices change, new technology becomes available, and those darn spammers just keep getting smarter. At least I didn't completely redesign everything this time.

It has been a great source of consternation for many of our friends that we have no furniture in our living room. It has remained as empty as the initial pictures I posted of our new house. Well, empty except for the stacked boxes because we have no furniture in which to put their contents away. Everyone seems to have a really hard time accepting this cavernous, empty room. We got a constant stream of phone calls and emails telling us about people who were selling their living room sets or furniture stores that were having sales. I thanked everyone for the information, but I had other plans. I wanted a pool table. And on Monday, we bought one.

I was delighted to discover a few weeks ago that Street View for Google Maps has come to Mazatlan. I spent hours looking around at pictures of this city that I walk every day. Kinda crazy, I know, but hey, I'm a geek. I stuck me that it would be a great way to show some of you who have never been here around my home town.

Newcomers to Mazatlan often bemoan the lack of "authentic" Mexican food in Mazatlan. And I can understand it. When most people think of Mexican food, they envision tamales, enchiladas, beautiful moles, and slow-roasted barbacoa. And while all of that food is authentically Mexican, it does not encompass all Mexican food. We live on the coast here. There isn't a lot of grazing room for cows and sheep and goats. We have delicious fish and shrimp. And the most Mexican food of all – hot dogs.

Summer is traditionally the time where things slow down for us, but that just hasn't been the case this year. In fact, I am finding it to be quite the opposite. I am actually quite ecstatic about it, but it the influx of new business has left me with little time to do things worth writing about, let alone write for pleasure. Rather than leaving the blog stagnant, I thought I would try reposting some of stories that people talk about most when they meet me. Even those of you who have read everything from the beginning might find these worthy of another read. This post dates back to just a few weeks after we moved here in 2007:

The good news is that I am finishing up a large project, so I will hopefully have time to share some real posts with you soon, but for now I still haven't found time to sit and write a coherent entry with a beginning, middle and end. Rather than give you a classic today, I have assembled a few odds and ends and random thoughts.
