Today Is the Worst Day Since Yesterday

E-mail Print PDF

I have to get over this need to do everything bigger than everyone else, this grievous self-centeredness, this apparent need to be the center of attention at all costs – what else could drive me to get Dengue twice in two months – with pneumonia sandwiched in between? Or maybe I just need better luck.

If you have heard that Dengue is worse the second time, you are correct. Way worse. I am absolutely kicking myself for my blithe Dengue report in October. See, as much as I try to be a pragmatic, reasonable woman, I still have a bit of old wife to me, and part of me thinks I brought this on myself by saying it wasn't that bad before. It's like fate or karma or whatever had to show me the error of my ways or knock me down a peg or something. It's irrational, I know, but it's there anyway.

I spent 4 days with a fever over 105°F. At first I thought it was just regular flu, and the back, shoulder, neck and other muscle pain were just from all the violent shivering and throwing up. But when all of my joints started to burn, I knew it was Dengue again, improbable as that seemed.

I have spent so much time in bed that my shoulders, hips, and thighs are bruised from laying on them. Even the area behind my ears is painful and swollen from having the cartilage of my ears pressing into it when I lay my head on the pillow, making it impossible to wear my glasses. I mean, come on, enough is enough.

Laying in bed all the time has driven my hair into a permanent series of spikes that culminates in a giant wave along the crest of my head, making me look like I have the Heat Miser for a hairdresser, and no amount of washing or brushing will cure it. I have opted to cover my head with a scarf, lest my reflection in my computer monitor continue to startle me. So now, sitting here in my ratty bathrobe, I am reminded of those women I used to see when I was little, cruising the grocery store aisles in polyester muumuus, hair in curlers, and chain smoking while they did their food shopping. But right now I don't care. I'm just blissed out because my fever is only 101 and I am sitting up.

I really thought that "Dengue Season" was over, with the cooling of the weather and the conclusion of the rains. But I heard one of the city trucks spraying for mosquitoes the other night, so I guess not. So stay vigilant everyone. Keep your screens closed and wear your mosquito repellent. Trust me, a little greasy DEET is way better than Dengue. Keep safe, and check out the CDC Fact Sheet.

Jennifer - I am so sorry that you got sick again. Know that I care and want you to get better soon. I see that you have got a wry sense of humour about it all. At least at this point, when you can finally get out of bed.
    Get well and stay well~!
  • jennifer
Thank you, Micheal. I think the return of my sense of humor is the first sign that I am feeling better. ;)
  • Nancy  - Ya basta!
Jennifer, Good grief, you didn't bring this on yourself! Get rid of that idea right away!

I'm glad you're feeling a smidge better, but please give yourself all the slack you can to recover fully, and I'm sure it will take some time. I can't help but think that your body needs some crazy healthy stuff, lots of fresh juice, vitamins, chia, and sunshine. That is, when you get your appetite back and feel better.

I'm glad you blogged about it, now all your readers can tell you "poor little lambie" and offer to bring you treats. Are you craving anything?

    Hugs, Nancy

I love empathy! Thank you. I have been subsisting on seven grain bread and OJ. I woke up this morning with a little bit of an appetite and a crazy hankering for pimento cheese. Unfortunately, I haven't seen any here, and I can't remember where I saw a jar of pimientos for sale!

    You poor woman!

No wonder the faux pie was up so long! I know feel your pain darling, painful ear-cartilge is annoying and ridiculous! I'm just glad Chuck is there with you, and I'm sure he is glad Dengue is not contagious!

We wish you health this holiday season!

P.S. What are you complaining about, Heat Miser is ... Hot!
heheheh, I couldn't stop myself. Get better soon Jennifer!
  • jennifer
    Hahaha. Nice pun. Thanks.

I, too, wondered about the pie blog being there for so long but it served a purpose..I recommended it to a lot of people moaning about the lack of canned pumpkin.

Glad you are on the mend and maybe you will have your appetite in full swing for a terrific Xmas dinner!
  • jennifer
Thanks Zoe. I have two months of appetite stored up, so look out!

I am feeling better now. Fever is down to 100. I am just making sure I get all of my illnesses out of the way before Christmas and New Years. :cheer:
  • Gini  - Your humourous concise writing style
is even better than before. Is it possible a terrible disease like dengue hones those skills. I hate to admit I laughed heartily at the description of you in bed.I have only ever seen you as chic and vibrant. Get well soon
  • jennifer
Maybe the fever cooked out my extraneous word box. Maybe I just had A LOT of time to contemplate my situation while trying not to lay on my ear. Thanks for the well wishes.
  • Viki  - Glad you're feeling a little better
Jennifer, I'm so sorry that you've been that ill! Ya'll please let us know when you're sick or need something, we could have at least brought Chuck a home-cooked meal and maybe found something that you could eat.

    Viki
  • jennifer
Thanks Viki. I will remember that. Chuck would certainly appreciate it. The poor man keeps losing weight every time I get sick. ;)

Locals scatter used coffee grounds in patio gardens, potted plants and throughout close by green areas to combat the aedes aegypti dengue mosquito. Get well soon.
  • jennifer
Good tip. Tested and works. ish.
  • mattssandy  - Today is the Worst day since yeaterday
Jennifer - are you allergic to your new house - you really have been ill alot since you moved?! Hope you are "all better" and realy to start a Healthy, Happy New Year.
  • jennifer
I really did consider that. But I can trace the source of all my sicknesses, and none of them are the house, thankfully. I would hate to have to move. I love this place!
