Urgent Need for O- Blood

E-mail Print PDF

I just received a request from the friends of Philip Pain to help get the word out about his urgent need for typeO- blood donation. Philip is in Sharp Hospital, here in Mazatlan, in critical need of surgery, but there is no O- blood available for transfusion during the surgery. Here is the message from Philip's friends and family:

PLEASE, PLEASE HELP

My Friend, Philip Pain, is in Sharp Hospital in Mazatlan, Mexico, in a critical condition. He urgently needs a life saving operation but has a very rare blood group, O Negative, and we are desperately searching for anybody who has “O Negative” blood in Mexico and can urgently donate blood and save his life.

If you are O Negative or if any of your friends are Blood type O Negative and if they would be willing to give blood, they will save his life.

If any one has “O Negative” blood group please contact Sharp Hospital in Mazatlan on (0052) (669) 986-56-78 to 84 or his insurance company, Atlas Insurance, on 01992708727

Thank you. Please ask your friends and family if they are O Negative Blood Group

Philip's friends and family are in the UK. I cannot imagine how impotent they must feeling trying to marshal help for their loved one from so far away. My heart goes out to them. 0- is an extremely rare blood type, especially among Mexicans. Please, everyone, ask your friends, your bartender, people you see on the street, if they are O- and can give blood to help save this man's life.

what is this page it's about animals please contact me I am putting together volunteer donors for Mexico.. for RH O NEGATIVE BLOOD
  • jennifer
That is a page from Henry Laxen's site, MazTravel. He maintains a database of expats with their contact information and blood type, if they want to give this information. This project has been going for several years. It says help the animals because he and Nadine are involved with Amigos de los Animales, and it says that on every page of the site. The blood donor list is legit, and thank you Iain for reminding me about it. You can click on the individual names, and after answering a question to screen out spam bots, view the contact information for those people with O- blood.

Friends of Mexico also maintains a blood donor database, and I know the family has been in touch with them.

The biggest problem with getting donors, among those who have a matching blood type, is the age restriction for donating blood here, which is usually 50. I understand that Sharp is accepting donors of any age for Philip Pain, so if you have O- blood, head on over to Sharp - NOW.

Hi Jennifer and everyone else who is helping. We have been given this info, just thought I'd post it here too. Thanks

It was posted by Chuck Hall from the Friends of Mexico organization.

" I talked with Neil Pain, Philip's father this afternoon and he stated that he and wife are in Mazatlan now. He wanted me to pass on the following information. Thanks for all the help. Sharps... ...will not be drawing any more blood today, but if you have o-negative, and regardless of your age (over 60), simply go to Sharp hospital Monday morning and tell them you are there to donate blood to Philip Pain, and your age is 59. The doctor told him to pass that on as the blood is really critical to Philip's survival. The radio station has been contacted as well as the newspaper and it will be announced at the Venados baseball game tonight. Thanks to all for your assistance."

Just an update. I heard that more than 10 people showed up at Sharp to donate blood, and that 12 units of blood were flown in from Florida. Scary.
  • jennifer  - Update on Philip Pain's Condition
I received a private email asking about Philip's condition and how the blood was arranged. I thought you all might be interested in the reply, so here is what I wrote:

The blood from Florida was arranged through The Blood Care Foundation (http://www.bloodcare.org.uk/html/home.htm), a charity in the UK. They contacted the blood bank in Florida and arranged the transfer of blood.
The family had to go to the airport themselves and pick it p and clear customs. Weird, but true. They had no idea what they were doing or where to go, but a local friend of mine took them to the airport and helped them through it. Apparently not a service the hospital takes care of.

British cruise ship passengers from a ship in port also donated blood. So everyone should keep that option in mind. It is not one I would ever have thought of. The biggest problem here was that the hospitals won't take blood from anyone over 60 - which eliminates a significant portion of our gringo population here in Mazatlan.

Philip had surgery on his legs 4 days ago and surgery on his back on Monday. They were surprised to find an additional broken vertebrae, so the surgery lasted longer than expected, but the doctors think it went well. His toes are continuing to get pinker and the hope is that he will keep them all. There is still some concern about one big toe. His kidneys continue to improve. The doctors will be bringing him out of the drug induced coma soon, so a better assessment of his condition will be coming.
