Why a Wet Washcloth?

E-mail Print PDF
damn bee

We are finally both mostly healthy and recovered. Just as I was starting to recover a little, Chuck started with a high fever. Sheesh. At least I was well enough to walk around a little when it started, so I could care for him like he did for me.

The whole time I was in bed, poor Chuck was trying to do anything he could to bring me some comfort. He fluffed pillows, brought ice water, and administered medication. One of the things he kept offering me was a wet cloth, which kinda baffled me. I kept thinking, "Why would I want something wet? I am in bed. A dry place. I don't want to lay here with anything wet." But he kept offering. I figured it was a sign of his desperation to do something – anything – for me.

When Chuck was in bed, I hovered around him as much as he did me, asking if there was anything else he needed. Finally, he asked me for a wet cloth. And then I realized why he repeatedly offered one to me. He kept trying to bring me a wet wash cloth because it's something he finds comforting. I should have put it together sooner. I blame the fever. It boiled my brain.

Feeling terrible that he had to ask, I went and got a fresh wash cloth and dampened it for him. I brought it to him and he laid it on the back of his neck and seemed to feel better. I couldn't help but watch the spot where the cloth touched his pillow, making a growing wet spot on the case. I just knew that was going to be awful to lay on, but to each his own, I guess.

It must have something to do with the way you grew up. My mom was not a wet cloth kind of person, and I was never offered one when I was sick, so I don't find them comforting in the least. In fact my mom wasn't a hovering kind of mom at all. But Chuck's mom was. She must have brought him a nonstop parade of fresh, cool, wet cloths when he was sick.

So how about it? Are you a wet washcloth person or not? What's the appeal?

There's nothing like a cold washcloth on the forehead when you have a high fever or headache. When the rag warms up I turn it to the other side. What also might work and eliminate wet spots on the bedding, would be those gel packs that stay soft that you keep in the frig. Happy you are both well again!

ahhh...the cold gel packs are a very good idea.

We always laid a wet washcloth across our forehead when running a fever. Didn't get the pillow wet, and was cooling!

I guess I may never get it. But when I get a fever, I am much more likely to get severe chills than sweat. Anything cold touching me is painful. But, I will remember now to bring one to Chuck.

Thanks. We are both doing much better now. Sometimes you have to get really sick to remember what a blessing it is to be healthy. And hopefully we have gotten it all out the way and can start the new year fresh!
