Last night was Mazatlan's 1st ever, and hopefully annual, Gay Pride Parade. There weren't that many participants – two floats, a couple of trucks, a limousine, and some walkers and roller skaters. But in a city that has historically refused port to gay cruises, I am in awe of the brave souls who participated.
It was hot. We staked out our spectator's spot early in an open air restaurant on the parade route, hoping that the shade and the breeze would make it bearable. Then Mother Nature intervened and brought in a fairly heavy cloud cover from horizon to horizon, making our forethought unnecessary.

The parade was supposed to start at 6:00, but this is Mazatlan, so we knew to count on something more around 7:00. At 6:30, a glitzily dressed person in roller skates and a flouncy skirt went speeding by us in the back of a pulmonia. We knew she had to be a parade participant, and in fact was one of the leaders when the parade finally came by.
When we finally caught sight of the parade, it was around 7:30. The very first vehicle was a truck from exa radio, who sponsored the parade. The truck was followed by lovely angels. Then we were treated to all kinds of people riding in, on, and around vehicles, all openly celebrating. The many dancers moved with skill and enthusiasm and no sign of stopping or tiring. They exuded such joy that even the accidental spectators couldn't help but be delighted.

I was really disappointed that the police didn't block off the street like they promised. Traffic darted around the parade, irritated at the delay, until they got close enough to realize what was going on. Many drivers came to a complete stop, stupefied, and gawked.
The last float was going by when the two gringo tourists at the table next to us finally clued in. "I don't think those women are women", said one to the other. I just turned and laughed. Were all of the rainbows, pink triangles, and Liza Minelli flashing us her panties too subtle?
Although the parade was brief, it was great fun and executed superbly. Cheers to all of you who organized and participated in the parade. I hope to see you again next year.
