We've reached that time of year. The temperature is up. Humidity is at it's worst. It is still. There is not a puff of a breeze to be found anywhere. The rain has pretty much stopped, so there are no sudden storms to bring relief.

There isn't much variance in the temperature these days. It's usually about 87 in the house when I get up around 7:30 and it gets up to 90 or so in the afternoon. The humidity stays above 70%. Sitting perfectly still doesn't even help, unless you are doing it directly in front of a fan. Moving around much isn't really an option.

A few weeks ago, the humidity was down, the temperature was down. I was excited to see 83 on the thermometer when I woke up. I thought Mother Nature was taking pity on us for being so cruel last year, dragging the heat to mid November then freezing us, but it turns out she was just being coy.

The sidewalks are empty in the afternoon. You may see the occasional listless pedestrian trudging along, trying desperately to finish their errands and wishing they had gotten up earlier that morning. The corners are punctuated by enterprising individuals selling sweat rags or iced fruit waters.

This time of year always presents some interesting choices for me:

Do I go into the kitchen and cook something and pass out from the heat? Or do I forget it and pass out from hunger?

Do I wear a bra around the house, thus pushing my breasts together and giving me zits between my boobs? Or do I go without and instead get the zits under them?

Do I leave the shower door open after a shower guaranteeing Tasha will leave muddy footprints all over the shower and bathroom? Or do I close it and guarantee speedy mold growth?

Do I refuse to do laundry and have a big pile of dirty clothes? Or do I do it and sweat all over the laundry while bringing it in and still have a pile of dirty clothes?

Mazatlan in September is an interesting experience, and a badge of honor proudly worn by those of us who are brave enough (or stupid enough, depending on your perspective) to make this lovely city our home year round.

I still love this time of year. The city is quiet and empty. Kids are back in school. Most residents stay indoors in the shade as much as possible. I know soon the temperatures will fall and the tourists will be back, so I savor every sweaty moment.

You are so right! And while we are melting, the albaniles outside mix concrete and work on the roof the entire day. I feel very pampered just being inside to do my sweating.

We've been eating a lot of peanut butter sandwiches, just too hot to go out or to fix anything else.

Might be time for an afternoon at the beach.

You are right, the only sensible thing to do in weather like this is have a beach day.
