One of the things I love about living in Mazatlan is the likelihood of encountering something wondrous and awe inspiring. I can be plodding along through an average day and unexpectedly find myself confronted with something that makes me feel like a child at Christmas. It's these little gifts for the soul that make Mazatlan such a special place, and my home.
Sunday, Chuck and I went to the beach for our Sun Day. It was absolutely packed. There wasn't a single table available at our favorite palapa. We stood in the sand and Ani, our usual waiter, scrounged a table and chairs out of the back and placed them on the beach for us.
He told us it was a holiday – family day. That explained it. The entire beach was busier than I have ever seen it, and it was all very large groups.
The day was a little frustrating. It was hard to get service. A Canadian couple sat near us. They were in a very social mood, and we were the only other English speakers around, so we made small talk for most of the afternoon. Chuck and I usually reserve Sunday for just us. The couple were perfectly nice people. We just didn't feel like talking.
So when sunset came and went, we lingered. Most everyone else had left. The waiters were stacking chairs. We sat there and chatted with each other while the the last of the light was draining from the sky. It was nice to sit there in the near darkness and listen to nothing but the sounds of the surf.
I looked out across the ocean, and the wave coming in lit up bright aqua. I kept watching to make sure that I had really seen it and it happened again. I exclaimed to Chuck, "Look! The ocean is glowing!"
Of course, he didn't turn his head in time, so he saw mostly darkness. And, of course, it didn't do it again. I am not sure what he thought, but he indulged me and kept watching. Eventually he was able to see it.
It was the most amazing thing. The entire inside of the waves were lighting up in succession as they crashed to shore. There was a beautiful light show all for us, no one else was around. I was completely mesmerized and kept waiting for the next one. Chuck had the presence of mind to pull out the camera and get some video, so I have a little bit of the magic to share with you.
The video we took was pretty long, so I have edited it down to 15 seconds. You can see two waves light up in the video: one at the very start, and one at the very end. You may want to dim your lights. I hope you enjoy it.

My friend Michael told me you can walk in the surf and leave glowing footprints behind you and about place where when you paddle a boat, the oars leave glowing streams in the water. How cool is that? Very romantic!
