This Sunday morning saw Jennifer and I having a lazy morning. The weather was beautiful and clear. We had been out rather late last night so it was nice to take things easy. Sundays are very quiet days here, with most shops closed and few people on the street. All of a sudden the tranquility was rudely interrupted by a sound that is very unusual here, but somewhat familiar. Even though it had been a while since we've heard it, it only took a second to place it because it was a regular, daily sound in Fort Worth. Sirens! Lots of them and very nearby.
I went out on the balcony to see what was going on. On the nearest stretch of the Malecon were ambulances. Lots of ambulances. I believe that every ambulance in town was there. All running lights and sirens. I counted at least 15 different ambulances all from different hospitals and organizations, with numerous support vehicles among them all making there way down the road. My mind was immediately filled with all sorts of horrible images. We hadn't heard anything before the sirens, and I couldn't see smoke anywhere, but I knew that this many vehicles responding meant it had to be a major incident. Maybe a building collapse or part of a cliff collapsing. I was a little puzzled that I didn't see any law enforcement or military responding with them. I've passed them and know that the military here has medics and ambulances. It would make sense that they would help out in response to a large incident, but I don't know that. I started hoping maybe it was a simulation or training exercise, but didn't really believe it.
The answer was provided a few hours later. Today is paramedics day. It was a parade in honor of the medics. That is one of many things I love about life here. Nobody is forgotten. Everything is celebrated with vigor, and as much noise as can be made. There are many excuses for a party and almost every day marks some kind of a special event around town. Even though this sight was rather disturbing to someone new that didn't know what was going on, it is a really uplifting to be going about your business and suddenly spontaneuosly come across people just enjoying life. I very rarely venture out in the city without breaking into a smile or outright laughter over some unexpected sight or event.
