Snowball Fight - Mazatlan Style

E-mail Print PDF
alt

I have heard rumors that it once snowed in Mazatlan, but I have never spoken to anyone who was actually here to see it. It's always my friend said, my uncle said, my hairdresser's aunt said, never a first-hand account, so I am highly skeptical. I really never thought I would see a snowball fight here, but I should know to never underestimate the ingenuity of children. Last week were lucky enough to witness a snowball fight - Mazatlan style.

A large group of young men came running down the beach laughing and chasing and pelting each other with sand balls. I had no idea that you could take a handful of sand and mold it into a cohesive ball, but now I do. They were having so much fun that I longed to go out and join them.

You can click on any of the pictures to see more of the scene. What really amazes me is the control the boys had. They were running up and down a large stretch of beach, in and around families, and occasionally hurtling the unexpected swimmer emerging from the ocean. They never ran into anyone or hit an unintended target.

If you click for the larger image of the picture above, you will see a little girl and her brother who wanted to get in on the action. They set about very seriously and studiously making sand balls. They managed to amass quite a stockpile of ready ammunition. Their mom, however, didn't think it was such a good idea. The kids never got to throw a single one. They sure had fun making them, though.
