Sun Therapy

E-mail Print PDF

We have both been pretty strung out lately. We are both just getting over lingering chest colds that still leave us a little winded. They were probably brought on, or at least significantly exacerbated, by stress. We have just been so busy. There is always too much work to do. We've fallen into a rut: work, eat, sleep, repeat. I think it happens to all of us. You just get so caught up in day-to-day life that you forget to live. Sunday, we cried uncle.

I was settling in to a long list of tasks I needed to complete when Chuck came in and said "Let's go to the beach." I blinked at him stupidly for a moment. Huh? The beach? I looked out the window at the dazzling topaz Pacific. I looked at my desk, unrecognizable under the notes and detritus of semi-ordered creativity. I looked back out the window. No contest. We went to the beach.

We made our way to our favorite palapa, hoping for a table on the sand. Disappointingly, they were all taken. I looked around at the tables available, tucked safely under the shade of the palapa. I have spent so much time at my computer lately that I have lost all traces of a tan, which is just wrong when you live in a tropical paradise.

I asked the owner if it would be okay to move another table onto the sand. He immediately had waiters carrying a table and chairs to wherever we wanted. I declined the offered umbrella, figuring that would be counter productive.

Someone was kind enough to schedule a regatta for our entertainment. We lazed away the afternoon watching the sailboats catch the wind and lose it, tack and shift, and race around buoys, jockeying for position. We ate shrimp and fish and drank beer. I dug furrows in the sand with my toes. We did a little shopping from the various beach vendors. Mostly, we just absorbed sun.

I didn't wear my watch, and we didn't bring the phone. We luxuriated in the zen of being without worrying about what time it was or how much time we were wasting. Finally, after watching the sun set over the water, we headed home.

I did not anticipate the full force of the restorative powers of a day in the sun. I've been tired a lot lately, which I naturally attributed to stress and being sick for so long. But for the past three days, I have been so much more energetic and alert it has been shocking. I have forgotten how to handle this much energy. This morning, I struggled to stay in bed at least until it wasn't dark anymore. I almost made it.

We have now decided to make every Sunday our Sun Day. No work, no stress, just the beach and the sun. We deserve it.

    Yea for Chuck!

I mean, that IS the reason you moved down there in the first place.
It would be down-right-wrong if you moved to Mexico and created the work-obsessed culture you moved so far to escape!

Drink one beer for those of us stuck in 38 degree drizzle next time you go!

38 degree drizzle? Yuck! I may even have two beers for you!

I think another wonderful thing is that you don't have to think about whether it WILL be sunny on Sunday for your Sun Day. Of course it will!

I'm glad you got some R & R. You deserve it.

    Now, get back to work!

It was sunny for Sun Day, of course. Managed two in a row. And actually getting more work done in between. Duh. Funny the things you can forget sometimes. ;)

Just Wondering - did you and Chuck get your Sunday at the Beach on the 28th? Is that too nosey - really just jealous as it is so cold here and the wind has been whipping the scarves from our necks when we venture outside. I want someone to enjoy what we cannot at this time....SM

    Oh yes, HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!!
  • jennifer  - Sunday at the Beach
No it's not to nosey ;)

I am sorry to say it only took us two weeks to break our promise to ourselves. Part of it was the weather. The wind was blowing crazy strong. But mostly it was because I had the flu...again.

I really wish people would stay home when they are sick. I caught it from someone who was sick, but came to a social event anyway because they were bored, and I paid the price. Pretty unfair, I think.

But we made up for it today. It was a beautiful start to the new year and we had the traditional Mexican good luck meal on the beach. I swear I am going to keep this tan!
