A Bit of Randomness

E-mail Print PDF

The good news is that I am finishing up a large project, so I will hopefully have time to share some real posts with you soon, but for now I still haven't found time to sit and write a coherent entry with a beginning, middle and end. Rather than give you a classic today, I have assembled a few odds and ends and random thoughts.

They're building a second story onto the bodega of the salon behind us. What anyone needs a two-story bodega for is anyone's guess; perhaps the new intended use is as something else. But I discovered – as I was naked and stepping out of my shower – that they can see directly into my master bathroom from there. I will have to do something about that.

I have discovered two new, albeit related, uses for piloncillo syrup. I used to enjoy Italian sodas (flavored syrup, a bit of cream, and mineral water over ice) quite a bit, but getting the necessary syrups here is a bit of a challenge. Piloncillo syrup makes an excellent Italian soda. Also, it is amazing for making a vanilla Coke or, even better, a vanilla Dr. Pepper kind of drink. Reminds me of Sonic.

I have been very busy as of late, and have also spent quite a bit of time writing up proposals for prospective clients, which hopefully bodes well for steady work throughout the Summer. Even so, we managed not to forget our wedding anniversary this year. It was really nice to take a day off in the middle of the week and just hang out with each other.

The Golden Showers trees are in bloom, marking the start of my favorite time of year here in Mazatlan. I love the balmy air, fragrant breezes, and the splashes of lurid color as all the tropical plants come back to life. It also marks the beginning of the quiet season bringing languid days, close nights, and a little bit of A/C. Head on down to the Plaza Machado to see the beautiful blooming trees.

It's also getting to be mosquito time again. All of the best hostesses not only put out drinks and snacks for their guests, but also offer a plentiful supply of non-greasy, low-odor Off in pump bottles. It's brilliantly considerate and also helps keep the guests from abandoning the party at dusk. I know we keep a couple of bottles on our table.
