Another Reason I Love Mexico

E-mail Print PDF

Chuck and I came home late last night. It was raining pretty good, and there was a bit of water in the streets. I opened the garage gates so he could back the truck in. He put on his emergency flashers and nosed out into the street to properly line up the truck with the garage, put the truck in reverse, started to back in, and we discovered why having a tiled garage is not always the great thing we think it is.

Our garage is pretty small. It is just big enough to put the truck in and still have the ability to actually open the door and get out. It suits our purpose just fine. It is a clean, secure place to park the truck, leaving it protected from both the weather and people whose main priority may not be that I find the truck where we parked it when I wake up in the morning.

The curbs on our part of Zaragoza are fairly tall. The street has also been resurfaced a number of times, making the gutters pretty deep with a sharp angle. What this means for us is that the ramp which goes from our garage, at sidewalk level, to the street is pretty short and steep and ends in a ditch of sorts that we have to get past to get up into the street to join traffic. When I pull out of the garage, I ease forward until the front wheels come to a sudden and definite stop in the gutter, and then pull out. The first couple of times I pulled out I forgot about the deep gutter and jounced right over it, rattling the teeth in my head.

Last night, as Chuck was backing in, the rear wheels entered the garage, and the truck came to its usual stop when the front wheels hit the gutter. Neither of us thought anything of it, but when Chuck hit the gas again the wet rear tires on the wet tile just started to spin. No amount of babying, bullying, or telling the truck what a good truck she is was getting it to move. Chuck tried to push while I sat behind the wheel. No dice. Chuck went into the house to find things to shove under the tires to create traction. No dice. The truck is stuck halfway into the garage. We can't back it in. We can't pull it out and just park in the street for the night.

It's 1:30 in the morning. There isn't a lot of help to be had. Everyone we know is tucked safely in bed or out for a night on the town. We don't have the phone number of a tow truck. Even the mechanic's shop is tightly closed. Chuck decides to go out in the street and try pushing the truck again. He is standing there in the pouring rain with his feet in a small river and his hands on the hood. I am sitting in the driver's seat scared to death that something is going to go terribly wrong: the truck is going to slip, or Chuck is going to slip, or both. Chuck is pushing, I am giving gas as gently as I can, and the truck is going nowhere.

Out of the darkness, another set of hands lands on the hood, and the truck goes smoothly into the garage. The man doesn't say anything and doesn't stick around long enough for me to even say thank you. He just saw we needed help, pushed, and left.

Mexico rocks.

    You're a poet!

People are just nice. There is an instinct for helping here that I have never experienced anywhere else. I thinks it's a part of the reason so many of us choose to call Mazatlan home.

I think it is way easier for my guardian angel to send help my way when I am in Mexico.
