We Need a Book Club

E-mail Print PDF
mazatlan book club

I don't mean one of those groups where everyone reads the same book and then tries to sound erudite while sitting around and discussing it. That would never work here. Forget trying to find the decent wine and good cheese for such a gathering, finding enough English language copies of the same book for everyone to read would limit us to Harry Potter. I'm thinking more of a book swap meet. We can all get together each month and bring the books we've finished reading and trade them for treasures we haven't yet discovered.

I just know that people out there have shelves of books mouldering away in the humidity, beloved but forgotten. I bet they include authors I have never read on a variety of topics that I have never explored. I bet there are wonderful books that I would never look at in a book store, but are enthralling or educational or at least interesting. And I need something to read.

I love words. I love my words. I love other people's words. I will read anything. I haven't tried a bodice ripper yet, but hey, I'm open to the idea. I also haven't read War and Peace, but I'm open to that, too. So, what do y'all say? Wanna share? Anyone interested?

Jennifer, I don't know about the book club, but I have tons of books you can borrow and return! When I was sorting through my books to move, I got rid of half of them on freecycle.com, brought several boxes to donate to the library here, and now I'm down to the ones I wanted to keep and/or re-read. So I don't reallly have any to trade right now, but I'll be happy to loan them.

    Thanks Viki,

I may take you up on that!

I'd be game, but every month might be a bit too often for me...also it would be helpful to know what kind of books people read. I don't read too many mass market paperbacks except Janet Evanovich, Sue Grafton, that kind of thing.

Do you use the library? I can always find good reading material there, and the stock is always changing.

I kinda think grabbing books that I know nothing about is fun. I have found out more interesting things and discovered some pretty good authors I would never had known that way. Of course, It has brought me my share of real dogs, too.

The problem with the library is that they are never open when I am near there. Their Summer hours are extremely short and don't fit in with my schedule at all.
  • Nancy
Jennifer, I emailed the library and told them that their hours were tough on those of us who walk... no one wants to be outside between 10 and 2 unless it is at the beach under a palapa.

I suggested that they do 8 - 12 three days a week and 12-4 two days or something like that.

What happens with me is I walk the dogs at 7 am and come home, exercise, clean up and by 10 am I am not too interested in walking 10 blocks each way in the hot sun.

I am going to stop in and talk to Loretta sometime, maybe if more of us did it next summer it would be easier to make use of their wonderful resource.

That's a good idea, Nancy. Can you please post the email for the library?

Thanks Nancy. I sent them an email, too. Crossing my fingers...

I just got back from the book sale at the library with 10 books. You might want to check it out!

Glad you wrote them, I have my fingers crossed.

What about the library at Plazuela Leone? The top floor, I am told, is all English books. (Ninos Heroes & Angel Flores)

I have an Amazon Kindle now and am so in love with it; have found a free book site, so now I only pay if I REALLY want to have a certain book. (Water for Elephants, The Story of Edgar Sawtelle, etc.) I am reading books I might not have chosen if not free. Ryder Haggard, Hawthorne, London, Barr, etc. Like you, Jennifer, I get almost physically ill if I don't hae a supply of books around.

Great little library and they have WIFI you can use - I tried to give a donation after we used it for several weeks but with my poor Spanish I could not make the Lady understand what I wanted to do so it was refused. There is a man that works in the afternoon or early evenings that speaks great English.
  • jennifer
Thanks Sandy, I will give it a visit. And now I have another place to add to my list of free wi-fi.

Zoe, I love reading online (when it's not to hot in my office). I keep meaning to do a post about it and sources for books online. Would you mind posting yours so I can add it to my list?

Mazatlan Book & Coffee Co. already provides the services you describe. They are located behind Santander Bank in the Golden Zone.

You pick out the books you want, hand over books that you want to trade-in, & David, or his son Sergio, will tell you how much you owe for the pleasure of reading whatever of the more than 10,000 that he has in his bookshop!
  • jennifer
I have been to David's shop a couple of times. It is a great place to buy maps. But the shop is sooooo far away from me and parking is just impossible. It's a great resource if you are already in the Golden Zone, but for me it is just difficult.
